Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about RipToneZ tones, compatibility, installation, or how our presets are created? You’re in the right place.
Our goal is simple: create great-sounding, reliable presets that let you spend less time trying to find your tone and more time playing guitar.
What is RipToneZ — and why was it created?
RipToneZ grew out of something I've experienced personally for nearly 40 years as a bedroom guitarist.
When I was a younger player, I wanted to do more than simply learn how to play my favorite songs. I wanted to plug in, play along with the record, and sound as close to the original guitarist as possible.
That was often much harder than learning the notes.
I'd spend countless hours trying to dial in guitar tones that sounded anything like what I was hearing on the records I loved. Instead of practicing and enjoying the music, I'd find myself fighting with amps, EQ, gain, effects, and settings—and still wondering why my guitar sounded nothing like the recording.
It was frustrating, and as a young guitarist, there were times when that frustration actually discouraged me from practicing.
But the desire never went away.
I didn't just want to learn the riff. I wanted to hear that sound coming from my guitar.
Over the years, that frustration gradually turned into curiosity. I began paying much closer attention to what actually creates a guitar tone—the amplifier, cabinet, speakers, microphones, EQ, gain structure, effects, signal chain, pickups, and all the small details that can completely change what we hear.
Eventually, that lifelong obsession with guitar tone became the idea behind RipToneZ.
RipToneZ exists for players who know exactly what I'm talking about: you've learned the song, you're playing the right notes, but something still doesn't feel right because the sound coming from your guitar isn't the sound that inspired you to learn the song in the first place.
And while recreating the sounds of your favorite guitarists makes these tones especially useful for practicing, learning songs, and playing along with recordings, they're not bedroom-only presets.
RipToneZ tones are designed to be musical, playable, and usable in the real world—whether you're practicing through headphones in your bedroom, recording in your home studio, rehearsing with a band, or stepping onto a stage.
Playing the right notes is only half the experience. Sometimes the sound is what makes you want to keep playing.
That's why RipToneZ exists.

You receive downloadable preset files for all of the tones included in the pack, along with any instructions or additional material specified on the product page.
Because RipToneZ products are digital downloads, you can load the presets onto your GP-200 and start using them after downloading your purchase.
-
RipToneZ presets are currently designed primarily for the Valeton GP-200.
A preset created for one modeler should not be assumed to work on another device, even if both products are made by the same manufacturer.
Support for additional modelers is planned as RipToneZ grows.
-
RipToneZ presets were originally developed and extensively tested on GP-200 firmware v1.5.0, which provided a stable and reliable platform throughout the development process.
Since then, I have successfully updated my GP-200 to firmware v1.8.0 and tested the RipToneZ presets on the newer firmware.
The presets work correctly on v1.8.0.
As RipToneZ continues to grow, presets will be tested on current GP-200 firmware whenever possible to help ensure compatibility for customers using newer versions.
RipToneZ presets are built to sound great—not to lock you into an outdated firmware version.
-
Yes. RipToneZ presets originally created on GP-200 firmware v1.5.0 have been successfully imported and tested on firmware v1.8.0.
During compatibility testing, the presets loaded correctly and performed as intended on the newer firmware.
Because firmware updates can sometimes change how devices behave, RipToneZ will continue testing compatibility as new GP-200 firmware versions are released.
If you're currently running v1.8.0, you do not need to downgrade your GP-200 to use RipToneZ presets.
-
RipToneZ GP-200 presets are imported using the Valeton GP-200 software/editor and then transferred to your GP-200.
Before importing new presets, I recommend backing up any existing presets you want to keep.
RipToneZ tone packs include instructions to help you through the installation process. Once the preset is imported and transferred to your GP-200, select the tone, plug in, and you're ready to play.
If you run into trouble installing a RipToneZ preset, contact us and we'll do our best to help you get up and running.
One important tip: Always make a backup of your GP-200 presets before making major changes or importing new files.
-
RipToneZ presets are designed to give you the same fundamental tone demonstrated in our recordings, but no preset can sound completely identical on every guitar and setup.
Your guitar, pickups, pickup output, string gauge, tuning, playing technique, pick attack, GP-200 input level, and monitoring system can all affect the final sound.
Headphones, studio monitors, FRFR speakers, guitar cabinets, PA systems, and audio interfaces can also reproduce the same preset differently.
This is normal with any digital modeler.
RipToneZ presets are carefully developed and tested to give you a strong, usable starting point. In many cases they'll sound great right out of the box, while your particular equipment may benefit from a few small adjustments.
The goal isn't just to give you a collection of settings—it's to get you as close as possible to the sound that made you want to play the song in the first place.
-
Absolutely. Every guitar, pickup, and playing setup is different, so small adjustments are completely normal.
A preset that was created using high-output active pickups, for example, may react differently with lower-output passive pickups. Your monitoring system and playing technique can also affect what you hear.
Sometimes a small adjustment to input level, output level, gain, EQ, noise gate, or another parameter is all that's needed.
RipToneZ gives you a carefully developed and tested foundation, but you're encouraged to make the tone work for your guitar and your ears.
If moving a knob makes it sound better to you, move the knob.

RipToneZ artist-inspired presets are developed by studying the tonal characteristics of the target sound and recreating those characteristics using the amps, cabinets, EQ, gain structure, dynamics, effects, and signal-routing options available within the GP-200.
It isn't simply a matter of choosing an amp model associated with a particular guitarist and calling the preset finished.
The tones are built by ear, auditioned, compared, adjusted, recorded, and refined until I'm satisfied with the result. Output levels and overall usability are also checked before a finished tone pack is released.
The goal is to capture not only the general type of sound, but as much of the character, response, and feel of the target tone as the GP-200 allows.
-
No. RipToneZ artist-inspired presets are independently created products.
Artist names, band names, song titles, album references, trademarks, and other identifying terms are used only to describe the sound, style, or inspiration behind a preset.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, RipToneZ is not affiliated with, sponsored by, approved by, or endorsed by any artist, band, record label, equipment manufacturer, or other rights holder referenced in connection with our presets.
The presets themselves are independently created by RipToneZ using the capabilities of the supported modeler.
-
Absolutely.
Once you've purchased a RipToneZ preset, you're free to use the resulting guitar or bass tones in your own music, recordings, videos, streams, rehearsals, and other musical projects—including commercial releases.
There are no royalties owed to RipToneZ for music you create using our presets.
Your music is yours. Rock out.
-
Absolutely. RipToneZ tones aren't designed just to sound good in a bedroom or carefully controlled demo recording. They're intended to be musical, playable, and usable on stage as well as at home.
Every live rig and venue is different, however. If you're running your GP-200 through an FRFR speaker, PA system, power amp, guitar cabinet, or another setup, you may need to make small adjustments to EQ or output level for your particular equipment and environment.
That's completely normal.
Whether you're playing through headphones at midnight or through a PA in front of a crowd, RipToneZ tones are made to be played.
-
No. Purchasing a RipToneZ product gives you a license to use the presets, including using the resulting guitar or bass tones commercially in your own music.
It does not give you permission to redistribute, upload, share, trade, copy for others, resell, or include the actual RipToneZ preset files in another product or download.
You're welcome to use the tones to make music, recordings, videos, performances, and commercial releases.
You just can't redistribute the preset files themselves.
If another player wants the tone, please send them to RipToneZ.
-
Don't panic.
If the platform where you purchased your RipToneZ tone pack allows previous purchases to be downloaded again, you should be able to retrieve your files using the account or purchase information associated with your original order.
I also strongly recommend keeping a backup copy of every RipToneZ tone pack you purchase on your computer, external drive, or cloud storage.
And before making major changes to your GP-200 or importing presets, it's always a good idea to back up the presets already stored on your unit.
A few minutes spent making a backup can save a lot of frustration later.
-
Because RipToneZ products are digital downloads, refund eligibility is governed by the refund policy displayed on the platform where you make your purchase.
Please review the applicable refund policy before purchasing.
More importantly, if you experience a legitimate technical problem with a RipToneZ product, please contact us and explain what's happening.
I'd much rather help you solve the problem and get you playing than leave you frustrated with a tone you can't use.
-
Yes. Custom tone creation is an important part of RipToneZ.
If there's a particular guitarist, song, album, era, or type of guitar sound you've been chasing, you can submit a custom tone request.
The more information you can provide—such as the artist, song, specific section of the song, recording or live version, and the guitar equipment you're using—the better I can understand the sound you're looking for.
Visit the Custom Tone Request section of RipToneZ for current details and pricing.
If there's a tone you've always wanted but could never quite dial in, that's exactly the kind of challenge RipToneZ was created for.
-
Absolutely. In fact, I want to hear what RipToneZ users are looking for.
If there's a guitarist, song, album, genre, or specific guitar sound you'd like to see in a future RipToneZ pack, send in your suggestion.
Customer requests help determine which tones get added to the development list. If several players are asking for the same sound, that's a pretty good indication that it's something worth creating.
Some of the best ideas for future RipToneZ tones may come directly from the players using them.
-
Yes. The Valeton GP-200 is the current focus, but the long-term plan is to expand RipToneZ to additional modelers and platforms.
However, I don't want to rush that process simply to make the RipToneZ catalog look bigger.
Before releasing presets for another modeler, I want to spend the time necessary to learn the platform, understand its strengths and limitations, and properly develop and test the tones.
I'd rather release 10 great tones for one platform than 100 questionable tones for ten platforms.
-
New RipToneZ tones and tone packs are developed on an ongoing basis, with new sounds added as they're completed and pass the testing and QC process.
Some tones come together quickly. Others require considerably more experimentation, comparison, recording, and adjustment before I'm satisfied with them.
For that reason, I don't believe in releasing a preset simply because a calendar says it's time.
If a tone isn't ready, it isn't getting released.
-
The RipToneZ Heroes Club was created to reward the players who supported RipToneZ right from the beginning.
The launch promotion is limited to the first 25 qualifying RipToneZ customers and includes special benefits available to those early supporters.
Because availability and promotional terms can change, visit the Heroes Club page for the current offer, eligibility requirements, and remaining availability.
The Heroes Club is our way of saying thank you to the players who believed in RipToneZ from the start.

You absolutely can create your own presets—and I encourage GP-200 owners to learn what their modeler can do.
But creating a great guitar tone can take a surprising amount of time. What you're buying from RipToneZ isn't simply a collection of parameter settings. You're getting the work that's already gone into researching, building, comparing, recording, adjusting, testing, and refining the sound.
For some guitarists, spending hours experimenting with amps, cabinets, gain stages, EQ curves, effects, and signal chains is part of the fun.
I happen to be one of those people.
But I created RipToneZ for the guitarist who would rather spend those hours playing guitar.
Plug in. Load the tone. Play.

Contact RipToneZ and tell me what's happening. I'll do my best to help.
If you're experiencing a technical problem, please include as much information as possible—your GP-200 firmware version, computer operating system, the equipment you're using, what you're trying to do, and what happens when you try it.
Screenshots can also be extremely helpful when troubleshooting.
And if your question isn't technical, you're still welcome to get in touch.
RipToneZ isn't just here to sell you a preset. I want you to be able to use it, enjoy it, and make music with it.
